Stop & Think Road Safety

Welcome to Stop & Think, Fleet Service GB’s dedicated road safety campaign. Designed to raise awareness and drive meaningful change, this initiative focuses on the critical importance of safe driving for work purposes. With driving recognised as one of the most dangerous work-related activities, Stop & Think highlights the shared responsibility we all have to reduce risk and save lives.

Safety Campaign Ignorance is no excuse

Ignorance is no excuse

‘Ignorance of the law is no excuse’ is a fundamental legal principle holding that individuals cannot avoid liability for violating a law simply by claiming they were unaware of it.

Managing work-related road safety presents, for companies, a continuing challenge which can only be properly addressed by putting in place robust processes and procedures that deal with all aspects, as defined by law.

Safety Campaign 5 –

What shape are your vehicles really in?

Company vehicles represent one of the largest investments after payroll. The Stop & Think campaign highlights how preventative maintenance and regular checks protect that investment, reduce costs, and create safer working environments.

Real examples from the FSGB Garage Network show how overlooked issues – like worn tyres or hidden damage – can escalate quickly. By embedding a driver learning culture and supporting it with tools such as the Achieve Driver App, organisations can strengthen wellbeing, efficiency, and operational resilience.

Safety Campaign 4 –

Every picture tells a story

Good communication can never be overestimated. Positive messages that show not only that the company cares but also demonstrates in real terms a commitment to driver wellbeing and safety is the way forward.

The Stop & Think campaign continues to identify lapses in driver concentration, further reinforcing the need for a programme of continuous driver training.

Safety Campaign 3 –

Seeing is Believing

As drivers become relaxed about their driving style there is a tendency to become complacent. Loss of concentration, for just a few seconds, can produce devastating consequences.

Seeing is believing – campaign number 3 – demonstrates all too vividly what can happen when distractions or other factors effect driving performance.

Manage the Risk not the Crisis

Manage The Risk Not The Crisis

It’s a recognised fact that many drivers do not receive any induction or familiarisation training prior to being allocated or using a vehicle for work purposes.

A simple education programme would make so much difference – the Stop & Think campaign highlights the challenges and reinforces the argument of involving a driver in a programme of continuous learning.

Road Safety Pays Dividends

By effectively managing fleets, companies can very quickly realise significant financial benefits – unfortunately there is a mindset that managing work-related road safety is considered to be an added cost, not an investment with almost immediate returns. This reluctance to invest can result in companies missing an opportunity to not only reduce costs but significantly improve compliance and safety.

Safety Campaign 1 –

Are Your Vehicles Fit For Purpose?

Long service intervals, long life components and vehicles manufactured to a very high standard have all contributed to a mentality that nothing on a vehicle needs checking.

Stop & Think is a reminder to every driver to check at all times that a vehicle is fit for purpose – nothing should be assumed.

Management Review of Driver Risk

Many organisations are not fully aware that when they ask someone to drive as part of their work, that the task of driving is no different to any other work-related task and therefore the same legal (and moral) duty of having in place suitable arrangements to manage health, safety and welfare still applies.

“Work related road risk has to be assessed just like any other health and safety risk in a business and the necessary control measures put in place. The prosecution of Renown Consultants Ltd in 2020 and hefty fine for health and safety breaches which led to two of its workers being killed in a road traffic incident is a salutary warning. The case demonstrates that regulators will take action where organisations do not have a systematic and robust approach to driver management. Things need to change and now is the time to act”

FSGB Stop & Think Road Safety Campaign

Fleet Service GB proudly introduces Stop & Think—a nationwide fleet safety campaign designed to promote safer driving practices for employees using vehicles for work purposes. Driving for work is one of the most high-risk activities undertaken by employees, contributing to thousands of road incidents each year. This campaign aims to raise awareness of the dangers, educate drivers and managers, and foster a proactive safety culture across the fleet industry.

Effective management of work-related road risk begins with a clear commitment to employee safety and wellbeing, underpinned by strong leadership and comprehensive company policies. At Fleet Service GB, we recognise that promoting driver safety isn’t just a legal obligation—it’s a moral imperative. Our mission is to help businesses embed road safety into their operational culture through data-led insights, practical tools, and ongoing support.

Real-world Insights and Expert Advice

The Stop & Think campaign will run over the coming months and will feature real-world safety content, including images of worn or damaged vehicle components captured by our garage partners during routine servicing and repairs. This powerful visual evidence will be complemented by expert advice, best-practice guidance, and safety alerts—resources designed to help drivers and fleet managers better understand and mitigate risks.

With over ten people losing their lives each week while driving for work, the need for change is urgent. Through this campaign, we’re calling on everyone in the fleet and transport sectors to take responsibility, stop and think, and take action. Together, we can reduce preventable incidents, improve vehicle safety standards, and protect lives on our roads.
