Return to Driving

This short guide has been produced to help companies and drivers manage work-related road safety and driver wellbeing following what could be a long period of inactivity for drivers and vehicles (three months or longer).

For example, a prolonged period of illness, maternity or paternity leave or a change of job for a period where driving was not a requirement.

Driver & Vehicle

Re-familiarise yourself with the vehicle. It may have been several months since you last drove it. If it is a new/different vehicle carry out a full familiarisation process.

Conduct a physical check of the vehicle before starting it. Check tyre pressures and overall condition of tyres especially the tyre walls which can bulge if the vehicle has not been moved for several months.

If the vehicle has not been used for a prolonged period, it should be checked by a qualifed mechanic.

Ensure you are comfortable in the vehicle and feel confdent to resume driving for work.

If you haven’t driven for some time take extra care on the roads and plan your journey to include adequate breaks.

Check the screen washer is working.

Check all lights and indicators are working.

Start the engine and check for any dashboard warning lights.

Take the vehicle for a short test drive before setting off on a long journey.
