Driving Down Fuel Costs

Here are some useful tips on how to save fuel:

Know where you’re going
Drivers on unfamiliar roads are about 25% less efficient than they should be, so using a sat nav system can save unnecessary mileage, studies show about 2% reduction in mileage.

Don’t spill it
The harder you accelerate, the more fuel you use. In urban areas you can use less fuel by easing onto the accelerator pedal gently. To be as fuel-efficient as possible, imagine a cup of coffee on the dashboard and the challenge is not to spill it!

Consistency is key
When your speed dips and bursts you use more fuel than you need to. Many tests have shown that regularly varying your speed up and down by as little as 5mph can increase your fuel consumption dramatically.

Be nosey
Whilst driving, look ahead to see what is coming up and keep a comfortable distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Looking closely at what pedestrians and other cars are doing, and anticipating what they might do next, can keep your speed as steady as possible and use less fuel. It’s also safer to drive this way.

Pressure’s on
Tyres are so important for safety, and also play an integral role in achieving the best results in efficiency and fuel consumption. Running tyres at a low pressure will use up more fuel.

Not driving
Now, this might sound silly and obviously not practical in all circumstances, but a way to conserve fuel is not to drive! Is my journey essential? Consider your day, and decide what is necessary – could a meeting be held online instead of face-to-face, or could you combine certain errands for a single trip?
