New cycle lane fines for motorists now enforcedin London

Drivers should be aware under expanded enforcement powers, Transport for London and all London boroughs can now use CCTV to issue penalty charge notices to drivers who park or load illegally in mandatory cycle lanes, putting cyclists at risk of a serious accident.

The changes are an attempt to improve safety for cyclists. More than half of people in the capital choose not to cycle because of concerns over road traffic, and official statistics showed the number of cyclist fatalities increased by 40% in 2020.

Most cars are already banned from driving within or crossing the white lines of mandatory cycle lanes and tracks, a prohibition previously enforced only by the police, but now motorists caught doing so will be fined by local London authorities.
